The Adelaide Bank Art Collection
An Address from Adelaide Bank Executive Director, Jamie McPhee
Bonhams & Goodman will auction the Adelaide Bank Art Collection on Sunday 23 November at 2pm, Adelaide
Whenever a corporate art collection is brought to auction it generates a great deal of interest and curiosity, and this often reaches beyond just the art and corporate worlds. To the general public, a corporate collection can offer a glimpse into the inner character of a large corporation, the public perception of which might be quite different to the reality within its walls.
As a vibrant assortment of works from a variety of artists in the 1980s, the Adelaide Bank Collection represents a snapshot of Australian art during this period. Containing works by Arthur Boyd, John Coburn, Pro Hart, Tim Storrier, Brett Whiteley and many others, the Collection is a rare and significant gathering of distinguished Australian artists.
But what does the Collection say about the Adelaide Bank?
To me it evokes an important period in the history of the Bank, as our custodianship of the Collection coincides with an era that that saw many defining moments in the Adelaide Bank story.
When the Collection was first being pieced together in the 1980s, Adelaide Bank was still the Co-operative Building Society of South Australia, having just become Australia's largest building society after merging with Hindmarsh Adelaide Building Society. In 1994, conversion to a bank was successfully sought and the Co-op became Adelaide Bank. Then, in November last year, we became a stronger entity again after our merger with Bendigo Bank.
Aussie Rules in $5.2 Million Collectors' Car Sale
Sunday 16 November, Sydney
The Bonhams & Goodman auction of the six-strong Dawson-Damer racing car collection realised a startling $3.1million in Sydney last Sunday evening. The great news for Australian enthusiasts is that home bidders beat global competition to keep the Collection’s two most important Lotus racing cars in Australian ownership. Top Lot was the 1963 Lotus-Climax 25 Formula 1 car as driven by legendary double-World Champion Driver Jim Clark to win seven Grand Prix races that season. It sold for a new Lotus World record price of $1.525million – and has gone to an Australian Lotus enthusiast who outbid International interest from European, US and Japanese opposition.
The sister 1966 Lotus-Climax 39 – as driven by Jim Clark in that year’s International Tasman Championship race series and later campaigned by Sydneysider Leo Geoghegan to become the most successful local contender in later Tasman series – sold to a Tasmanian Lotus enthusiast for $360,000.
