Bonhams & Goodman has sold a part of the car collection
of Mr Lindsay Fox for close to $2.3million at the much anticipated
auction at the Fox Car Museum in Melbourne's Docklands on
7 March. At the historic sale, a c1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL
Gullwing fetched $526,400, selling to an Asian businessman
who underbid the Ross Polkinghorne Gullwing that Bonhams &
Goodman sold two years ago. An Adelaide radio personality,
Jeremy Cordeaux, bid over the phone and bought the Mercedes
300 SL Roadster, the convertible version of the Gullwing,
for $465,000.
A good crowd of 350 people, many of whom were in Melbourne
for Grand Prix week, attended the sale, which added to the
festivities. Bonhams & Goodman received telephone bids
from another 47 people unable to attend the auction. Tim Goodman
said, "We are delighted with the result as this is the
highest realisation Bonhams & Goodman has achieved for
any car sale. The market for mid twentieth century sports
cars is very strong and I am happy to say that all lots sold
to local buyers as the strong Aussie dollar made it difficult
for overseas bidders."
Other highlights include a c1958 Porsche Speedster that sold
for $133,200 and a c2002 Porsche Gemballa GTR-500 Biturbo
brought $145,000. The 1962 Ferrari 400 SuperAmerica, believed
to have been owned by both Enzo Ferraris chief engineer
and former publisher Eddie Shah, had been expected to fetch
close to $500,000 but failed to sell, while a c1972 Ferrari
Daytona 365 GTB /4 did bring $192,640. Some Classic VW Beetles
brought unexpected results as well. Both the 1956 and 1960
examples were estimated to sell for no more than $4,000 but
the older model went for $7,000.
